You’ve most likely had countless blood pressure tests during your life. These tests are standard in general check-ups, first appointments with a new doctor, and before most medical procedures. But do you understand what the numbers they reveal mean?
Understanding your blood pressure is important when it comes to protecting your long-term health. So let’s break it down for you.
What Is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure tests allow doctors to measure exactly how hard your heart is working to ensure blood circulation throughout your body. There are two numbers:
- Systolic (top number): Pressure when your heart beats
- Diastolic (bottom number): Pressure when your heart rests between beats
Typically, a normal blood pressure reading for most adults is 120/80.
High vs Low: What’s What?

It’s important to note that the above table is to be used as a general indication. Individual blood pressure results are determined based on factors such as age, overall health, and other factors. Your doctor will be able to determine what is normal for you specifically.
When Should I Be Concerned About Blood Pressure?
You should consult with your GP if:
- Your blood pressure is consistently outside the normal range
- You feel dizzy, lightheaded, or fatigued
- You experience frequent headaches or blurred vision
- You have a strong family history of heart disease or stroke
Often, there are no obvious symptoms of high blood pressure, which is why it’s important to have routine check-ups with your doctor. If left untreated, high blood pressure can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage.
Keeping Your Blood Pressure in Check
High blood pressure, in many cases, can be managed and even prevented with healthy habits, such as:
- Stay physically active
- Limit salt and processed foods
- Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol
- Manage stress through sleep, mindfulness, or talking to a health professional
