Safe Travels! The Importance of Travel Vaccinations

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of planning for an overseas holiday. But amongst finalising your itinerary, booking your stays, and organising what to bring along in your suitcase, travel vaccinations often fall to the bottom of the priority list.

No matter where you’re travelling to or how long for, your health should be a top priority. Understanding and scheduling recommended travel vaccinations is a surefire way to protect your health and minimise the risk of unexpected health surprises during your travels.

Why Do I Need a Travel Vaccination?

By travelling to different parts of the world, you’re exposing yourself to not only different cultures, but also different regions’ health risks. While diseases such as typhoid, rabies, and cholera are rare in Queensland, Australia, this isn’t always the case for other countries.

Vaccinations are designed to protect your immune system. Travel vaccinations are often in place to maintain your health during your travels, as well as to protect those around you. Just as we opt to receive a flu vaccination every year, travel vaccinations help reduce your risk of contracting any serious diseases or illnesses that may be prevalent in your destination.

Common Travel Vaccinations

Some of the most common travel-related diseases include:

  • Typhoid: Mainly a concern in parts of South and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines.
  • Rabies: Typically spread through stray dogs or wildlife across Asia, Africa, and Central America.
  • Cholera: Most commonly found in parts of Africa, Bangladesh, and Haiti, due to limited access to clean water.
  • Hepatitis A: A liver infection common throughout Central and South America, Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa in areas with poor sanitation.
  • Hepatitis B: Recommended for those travelling through China, Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

When Should I Get My Vaccination?

Once you’ve booked your trip, we recommend alerting your doctor so you have an understanding of when to get your travel vaccination. Some vaccines require multiple doses over a few weeks, so it’s important to understand what’s required early on to plan your vaccinations properly. Your body also needs time to develop its new immunity.

By booking an early consultation, you’ll receive the necessary advice and vaccination schedule to suit your travel itinerary.
